G Love & Special Sauce at the Troubadour

G Love & Special Sauce are alternative blues/hip-hop troubadours originating in Philly who have commanded the acoustic funk spotlight for more than two decades – both literally and figuratively. Frontman G Love (aka Garrett Dutton) is practically a one-man band himself with his ageless blues guitar, wailing harmonica, and lyric style that is equal parts Robert Johnson and KRS-One. And making the sauce so special is G Love’s backing combo of liquid acoustic bass and loose, sloppy-but-smooth drums and percussion. From his days playing solo on the streets of Philadelphia in the early 1990s, to joining forces with bassist Jim “Jimi Jazz” Prescott and drummer Jeffrey “Houseman” Clemens, G Love & Special Sauce have morphed into an ensemble that has butts across the nation shaking to its uncaged old-school groove.

In support of its 2015 “Love Saves the Day” album, on January 28 G Love & Special Sauce will appear in Los Angeles at the Troubadour – a club that is practically that is the trio’s namesake. Opening act Ripe starts butts to shakin’ with its retro-funk melodic din.
